Kathi is the proud Mom of Gabriella who is seven and Michael (Mikey) who is five. She is also honored to be a special needs parent. Since Mikey was 6 weeks old they have been in and out of the hospital trying to figure out his health issues. Now that Mikey is stable enough for Kathi to return to work in the field that she loves most, Kathi is delighted to be working at The Nursery with the toddlers. Kathi has taught children for 12 years including toddlers and elementary aged children. Kathi says the toddlers are her favorites, for that is the age when most learning occurs.
Kathi’s education includes a bachelor’s degree from American University and an Early Childhood Education certification.
Kathi has learned so much from having a special needs child and it has helped her realize that all children are special in their own way. Kathi’s priority is children come first and her philosophy is that all children are equal based on their strengths and weaknesses. Every child is unique and can be successful. Kathi treats all children with respect so parents can feel a sense of security knowing their child is being well cared for during the day.

You will find Miss Maria working in the infant room in the mornings. Maria was the first Caregiver hired for The Nursery. Ms. Bonnie Hughes, Director
Bonnie Hughes, Director of The Nursery at Our Lady of Sorrows, grew up in nearby Chatham. Bonnie graduated Cum Laude from Fairleigh Dickenson University in Madison with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. She is a member of Phi Omega Epsilon, the honor society for education majors.
Bonnie began her career in Early Childhood Education in 1982, when her two sons went off to preschool and she joined them. As a co-teacher at the local preschool, she taught two year olds and four year olds. She found that she truly loved working with pre-schoolers, and after working there for four years, Bonnie decided to pursue a full time career in Early Childhood.
While earning her Preprimary certification in Education, she worked as an assistant teacher and then a head teacher in Montessori schools. In 1995 Bonnie opened a small preschool in her home, which she kept open for six years.
Bonnie then became the Director of Kiddie Academy in East Hanover. Before coming to OLS Bonnie was the Director of a Bright Horizons Center. Her on-going training led to graduate courses in Education at William Paterson University in preparation for a Masters Degree which she hopes to complete in the future.
Along with her education and experience, Bonnie is very involved with creating and advocating for high quality child care.
She is very familiar with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation process and their standards, having received accredidation in the two centers she was the Director. She follows and believes in using the Infant-Toddler Environment Rating Scale (ITERS), which is the new standard in Infant-Toddler care.
Bonnie has also worked with the National Early Childhood Program Accreditation (NECPA) accreditation system. She was a member of the Essex County Director’s Group while working at Bright Horizons, and a member of The American Montessori Society. Bonnie also belongs to The Coalition of Infant Toddler Educators (CITE) and NAEYC.
Bonnie has presented workshops to both parents and fellow educators on various topics, and has used various curriculums in her career including The Creative Curriculum, Prime Times, and High Scope..
When not working, Bonnie is very involved with her Parish, St. Cecilia’s in Rockaway. She recently bought a 150 year old house that had been neglected for many years and is patiently repairing and restoring it. She enjoys gardening, needlework, knitting, decorating, reading and sewing. Her two grown sons, Larry and Chris are a big part of her life. Larry graduated from University of Scranton and then received a Doctorate from Duke University. Larry is married to Meg and they have two beautiful children, Emily and Will and a third child expected in July. They are, of course, the light of “Gamma’s” life. Chris graduated from Wagner College and presently works for the Township of Denville. Chris was married to Julia this past July.
“Working with Our Lady of Sorrows School to get the Nursery up and running is a highlight of my career,” she says. “Creating a space where parents and caregivers work together to nurture and teach our littlest ones is the fulfillment of a dream for me.”
